Day 5 - October 15, 2019

We started our day by driving the 15 miles from our dry camping paradise back up to Springdale and got Wilbur checked into the RV park before walking the half mile into the park.

 It's been many years (35, to be exact) since we last visited Zion, so the shuttle buses (trams) were a new experience for us.  It was nice to be able to move quickly through the main canyon without dealing with traffic jams.  We rode the tram up to the last stop (the Temple of Sinawava) and hiked along the Virgin river up to The Narrows.




Tonight Wilbur sleeps under the stars and the canyon walls!

Tomorrow we'll attempt to take the bikes with us as we explore.

Well, morning did arrive, and we decided to continue North and East towards Monument Valley and Four Corners.  We did a quick pass through Monument Valley 2 years ago, but didn't take the time to explore beyond the views from the highway.  Wilbur isn't really allowed to explore the Valley Road inside the Navajo Tribal Park, so we opted for a 28 mile scenic tour that included the back country arches. Our driver/guide was Bernard, and having been born and raised in the Valley, he was a wealth of information.  The route through the Valley Road offered the sweeping views, including the Totem Pole formations. But the Back Country route included the more unique formations like the Sleeping Dragon and the Ear of the Wind arch. If you lay on your back and look up at this arch you can see the image of the eagle! And this would make great yard art back in Redmond. The walls below the Suns Eye arch contain cave drawings. ...

Day 25 - November 4, 2019

We were back on the road this morning.  We headed west towards Ajo, through the edge of Tucson and across the Togono O’odham reservation and we ended up in Why.  Don’t ask why because I don’t know why.  Bob says, why not.  The town of Why is on the edge of the reservation, and at the North end of the Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument. We finally found the heat!  It was 88 by the time we set up for the night, and we actually had to turn the air conditioning on.  It’s interesting to constantly have the border patrol present.  We've been stopped at check points, seen helicopters and drones flying, passed numerous patrol cars and trucks, and tonight we're camping a quarter mile from a border station facility.  It’s something we don’t live with in Oregon. Tomorrow we'll visit the National Monument, but this evening the view is from the Coyote Howls Campground in Why, AZ.
