Day 13 - October 23, 2019

Another day of adventure.  Started the day off with a stop at Tuzigoot National Monument, very fascinating.  More Native American pueblo ruins and artifacts.

Then to the Clarkdale historic train depot, but there were no train rides available today and they are booked through the end of the month.

Next stop, Jerome, described as the largest ghost town in America.  What a drive, with many more switchbacks to climb nearly 2000 feet from the floor of the Verde Valley.  Wilbur (and Bob) did fine but I think about the late 1800s early 1900s and the conditions of the road and their mode of transportation and I am thankful.  We spend several hours at the Jerome State Historical Site.  This was the home of one of the copper mine owners and is now a museum that houses a lot of information and artifacts about the history of Jerome and the copper mines.   In it's prime, Jerome was one of the four largest towns in Arizona.  Between fires, sliding down the hill and the mines closing, the current population is about 500.  We drove through the actual town but missed the RV parking lot and logistics made it too hard to go back so we ended up not stopping in town. The drive was beautiful!!

On the way back we stopped in Old Town Cottonwood and had dinner at The Tavern Grill.  It was amazing!  We shared a meal of 6 medallion steaks with different sauces.  They were all good and we probably have another meal leftover.

We walked through a few shops and headed back to Dead Horse State Park for the night. There are forest fires to the North of us and it is sure making the sky ugly.  Last night the smoke cleared up pretty well, but tonight it looks (and smells) pretty bad.
